AN ODE TO SPORTS

belarbcom17

(To the tune of Jingle Bells, with a touch of chaotic melancholy)

Covid Times, Covid Times,

What do I even say?

The sun is bright, the pitch is right

But I can't go and play!

HEY!

Covid Times, Covid Times,

It's totally unfair!

I wore my mask and washed my hands

Now get out of my hair!

Dashing through the news,

They're cancelling all the games

The $471 billion sports industry*

Is going down the drain.

Broadcasting is on a loss

Commercials have lost their gloss

And with no match day revenue,

The business has gone for a toss!

HEY!

Covid Times, Covid Times,

You are such a bore!

I just want to watch my heroes

Play the field once more!

Living in a daze,

Where IPL is gone

The $6.8 billion industry

That earns so much year on!

First time since World War II

Wimbledon won't be held

Without its strawberries and cream*

The void will sure be felt.

HEY!

Covid Times, Women's Golf

For Saudi would've been a first!

Saudi Ladies International* is postponed,

Covid you're a curse!

HEY!

11,000 athletes

Were training every day,

But for the Tokyo Olympics,*

We all will have to wait!

Well on the brighter side,

F1 is coming back*

And so is US Open*

So the thrill is back on track

And though we cannot play,

eSports is pretty great

NASCAR's virtual racing event*

Was the most watched till date!

HEY!

Covid Times, Covid Times

I miss going out!

Hopefully, in a little while,

We'll turn it all around.

HEY!

Covid Times, Covid Times,

I'm giving you the ball.

With patience, hope and a bit of time,

We'll make it through it all!

*Additional Information:

  • The sports industry earns mainly from three aspects - broadcasting, which includes media rights, commercial which includes sponsorship and advertisements and match day revenue which comes from ticketing and hospitality.

  • Strawberries and cream are traditionally consumed at Wimbledon. In 2017, spectators consumed 34,000 kg of strawberries and 10,000 litres of cream! This reflects how industries are interconnected and slow down in one will affect others too.

  • Saudi Ladies International was going to be held earlier this year but has been rescheduled to October 8-11, 2020. This four-day tournament with a million-dollar prize is a big step for women in Saudi Arabia.

  • The 2020 Summer Olympics which was to be held in Tokyo this year has been postponed to July 2021. This event is expecting participation from over 11,000 competitors in 339 events across 33 different sports.

  • F1 and the US Open will be coming back with games. F1 races are scheduled to start from July 5, without live an audience. Also, while there was uncertainty as to whether the US Open will be held this year at all, the plans are to host it in August. Similarly, Bundesliga or the German Football League also started without live spectators.

  • NASCAR's virtual racing event eNASCAR this year, was the most-watched virtual sports event ever, with over 1 million viewers tuned in.
